How to Compare Red Light Therapy Brands: The Specs That Actually Matter

Shopping for a red light panel can feel like reading two dozen versions of the same sales page. Every brand claims the strongest output, the best wavelengths, the most clinical results. When everyone says the same thing, the words stop meaning anything, and it gets hard to tell a genuinely good panel from a well-marketed cheap one.

The way out is to stop comparing claims and start comparing the few things that actually matter, and to ignore the one spec everyone tells you to obsess over. Once you know which is which, you can judge any brand fairly, ours included.

Irradiance, the power number brands shout about, matters far less than marketing suggests. 1. A full spectrum of wavelengths

Wavelength is the single most important spec, because it determines what the light can actually do and how deep it reaches. Different wavelengths are absorbed at different depths, from surface skin to deeper tissue. A panel offering only one or two wavelengths is limited to a narrow slice of that range, and no amount of raw power makes up for a wavelength it simply does not emit.

This is the spec to actually shop on. Look for how many distinct wavelengths a panel delivers and whether they span both the red range (around 630 to 670nm, absorbed nearer the surface) and the near-infrared range (around 810 to 1060nm, which reaches deeper). 2. Irradiance, and why not to obsess over it

Irradiance is the power density of light reaching your skin, usually written in milliwatts per square centimeter. It is the spec brands shout loudest about, and it is the one we would gently tell you to care about least, as long as a panel clears a reasonable bar.

Here is why. Irradiance is essentially the inverse of session time. A higher number means a slightly shorter session to deliver the same dose; a lower number means a slightly longer one. Past a sensible threshold, more irradiance mostly just means you stand there a few minutes less. It only becomes a real issue at the extremes. If a panel is so weak you would need an hour to get anywhere, that is impractical. But chasing the single highest number on the market buys you very little beyond a shorter timer.

The figure is also easy to inflate, in two ways worth knowing. The first is distance: a big number measured right at the panel surface collapses by the time you reach the 6 to 12 inches you would actually use. The second is subtler. Near-infrared light tends to read as higher irradiance per unit of power than red light does, so a panel weighted heavily toward infrared can post an impressive irradiance figure without being a better therapeutic tool. A big number can simply mean the panel leans infrared, not that it is stronger where it counts.

What actually matters

Do not shop for the biggest irradiance number. Look for a quality panel with a full spectrum of wavelengths that delivers a workable session in a reasonable time. Irradiance only matters at the edges: strong enough to be practical, and honest about the distance and the mix of wavelengths behind the figure. Any single number quoted with no distance is marketing, not a spec.


3. LED design

The LEDs themselves vary in quality and design. One meaningful difference is single-chip versus dual-chip diodes. A dual-chip LED houses two wavelength emitters in each diode, which helps deliver more even coverage of multiple wavelengths across the panel rather than clustering them. Bulb count and layout also affect how evenly the light lands on your body.

4. EMF at a stated distance

Since you stand close to a panel daily, low electromagnetic field output is worth checking, and it is one of the quieter ways cheap panels cut corners. As with irradiance, the number is only useful with a distance attached. A quality panel's electronics produce little to no measurable EMF by the time you reach treatment distance, while many budget panels are never tested at all. 5. Build quality and warranty

A red light panel is a long-term purchase, and the least glamorous specs often predict satisfaction best. Look at the housing and materials, how the panel manages heat, whether it comes with a proper stand or mounting option, and what the warranty covers and for how long. A confident warranty is a brand quietly telling you it expects the panel to last.

Once you know what to weigh, the warning signs get easy to spot. Be cautious of any brand that leads with a giant irradiance number and hopes you will not ask about distance or wavelengths, avoids listing its specific wavelengths, leans entirely on testimonials and celebrity association instead of specifications, or offers a suspiciously short or vague warranty. The best brands make the meaningful numbers easy to find and do not need a single inflated one to carry the pitch.
